INFRASTRUCTURE DISASTER RECOVERY (DRS)
Infrastructure disaster recovery is the process of restoration of IT services working capacity after various failures and shortages. Considering that downtime of critical services and possible data loss can lead to significant financial losses, each organization should develop its own disaster recovery plan.
When forming the disaster recovery plan, you should assign priority to each service based on the degree of its importance and criticality of the impact on the business work in general. On the basis of priority, the value of guaranteed availability and RTO and RPO target vales must be defined.
Virtualization technologies have significantly simplified the process of disaster recovery by using High Availability (HA) functionality - in case of one physical host failure management system will automatically restart virtual machines running at it at another (backup) host.
However, this technology does not protect IT services from all the possible risks. Possibility of data damage, probability of the entire platform failure makes it relevant to include data backup in the disaster recovery plan.
Let’s consider the most popular and technologically completed solutions, on which your disaster recovery plan can be based:
- Metrocluster
- VMware vSphere Replication
- VMware SRM
- CommVault
- SnapMirror
- SnapVault
- Mutistore
- SnapManager
Backup Platform in the Public Cloud
With the development of cloud computing more and more customers are ready to give up their own infrastructure in favor of highly available services on virtual machines deployment in the public cloud.
However, there are still situations, caused by specifics of the company’s activity, by the presence of already implemented projects on building the private cloud, by specific requirements for productivity, security, etc., which may be temporary but do not make it possible to use the public cloud hosting for their IT services.
For the vast majority of companies having two or more personal platforms is still an unattainable luxury. And, if for some reason you have no opportunity to use the public cloud as the main platform it can be used as the backup one.
We offer the following services
- Designing the disaster recovery plan (IT services, priorities, availability, RTO, PRO, instructions)
- Implementing the disaster recovery plan (delivery of equipment, software, installation, setting)
- Testing the disaster recovery plan (check of working capacity of the existing recovery plan)
- Infrastructure disaster recovery in the public cloud (DRS)
- Building the fault tolerant database infrastructure

VSphere Replication Technology
provides the ability to replicate data between the sites at the hypervisor level without using special DSS features.
Ability of replication between the “uncoordinated” at DSS and independently managed infrastructures allows to simplify (and make cheaper) replication system essentially. Actually, this technology paves the way to the simple and effective implementation of the backup platform in the cloud.
The technology itself is quite simple from the user's perspective. The changes made in the virtual machines disks at the main site are monitored by the hypervisor and then, in accordance with the predetermined RPO (Recovery Point Objective) policies are periodically synchronized with the backup site. With that, synchronization is ruled by service VR Appliance virtual machines located at the both sites and the data are transferred between the sites from the hypervisor at the main site to the VR Appliance at the backup one.

We note that this technology is available even for ordinary vSphere platform users, as it is included for free in almost all the versions.
VMware Site Recovery Manager
extends protection against failures on all the applications and small infrastructures. Reduction of the costs of recovery through the backup infrastructure consolidation and the use of cost-effective vSphere Replication component. Simplification of disaster recovery management through centralized recovery plans. Guarantee of rapid and reliable recovery through automatic failover and return to the basic environment, testing without disrupting work and the planned transfer operations.
Traditional books of instructions on disaster recovery are complicated and often do not keep pace with the IT environment development. Books of instructions can be replaced by centralized disaster recovery plans managed directly from VMware server:
- Record of the entire recovery process into a convenient centralized recovery plan
- Simplification of recovery plans setting due to automation of many stages of traditional plans
- Implementation of regulatory requirements due to the documented recovery plans and test results

Traditional failover processes often do not meet the target recovery time requirements due to manual processes and outdated books of instructions. Guarantee of the rapid and reliable recovery and of compliance with the target recovery time requirements due to automation and frequent testing of failover plans.
- Automation of failover process and elimination of risks specific to manually performed processes
- Frequent failover testing without affecting productive systems
- Guaranty of data loss absence and coordinated applications recovery in the framework of the planned transfer
- Automatic virtual machines return to the original infrastructure for more efficient regular transfer
Preventive failover helps to cope with the consequences of the inevitable failures and to perform scheduled transfer operations to provide load balancing and to prevent downtime due to scheduled maintenance. Optimization of regular transfer operations due to the planned transfer and automatic return to the basic environment.
